Collection description

Unlike the Chinese rare materials that were transferred to the Cheng Yu Tung East Asian Library in 1935, the Japanese materials remained and are currently house in the Royal Ontario Museum H. H. Mu Far Eastern Library. For those items that bibliographic records were created, they should be accessible via the University of Toronto Libraries catalogue under the “ROM” location.

There are over 150 Japanese items mostly from the latter part of the Edo period that include wasobon, chirimenbon, maps, and ukiyo prints. Among the oldest items in the collection are Wakoku hyakujo 和国百女 (1693), Tobae fudebyoshi 鳥羽絵筆拍子(1772), and Ehon seiro bijin awase 絵本青楼美人合 (1770). All items are preserved in acid-free paper boxes and stored in temperature-controlled facilities.
